What is a Repair Café?
We throw away a lot of items; it may be a lamp that won’t switch on or a jumper that has a hole in it. It is often difficult to find someone who can fix these items and knowing how to make repairs is a skill quickly lost. This is a threat to a sustainable future and to the circular economy, in which raw materials can be reused again and again.
Repair Café Winchester is one of many cafés across the world that address this issue by bringing together skilled volunteers who can fix all sorts of items and pass on the skills to their owners, who watch while it is mended. Our volunteers want to show you how much fun repairing things can be, and how easy it often is!
The sorts of items which may be repaired include clothes, furniture, electrical appliances, computers, bicycles, and toys amongst others.
By doing this we are saving items going to landfill, extending their life and saving on raw materials to make a new item. All this helps in the reduction of emissions of CO2 and ultimately helps with reducing climate change.
Just as important, Repair Cafés also help bring communities together where you can meet for a chat with a hot drink and piece of cake!
